Get written contracts from every overseas supplier. We need these, plus proof of payment, for any claim.
Who can buy it
- At least one of you must be a permanent UK resident, meaning your main home is in the UK when you buy. British citizenship on its own isn’t enough for a wedding abroad.
- Your ceremony can be a marriage, civil partnership, renewal of vows or a blessing, including non-legal ceremonies.
- Your reception must be within 30 days of your ceremony.
- You need to buy at least 1 month before the wedding, and no more than 24 months ahead.
What’s covered abroad
- Cancellation, curtailment and rearrangement, for example if your venue is damaged by fire or flood, or one of you or a close relative is seriously ill.
- Supplier financial failure, including overseas suppliers and sole traders, if you have a written contract and proof of payment. This cover starts 45 days after you buy.
- Ceremonial attire, rings, flowers, cake, attendants’ gifts and wedding gifts during the cover periods in the policy.
- Photography and video, if the images can’t be delivered for the reasons listed in the policy.
- Wedding cars and transport on the day.
- Personal Liability up to £2m, except for weddings in the USA or Canada.
- Optional Honeymoon Cover, which you can add for weddings anywhere.

The Channel Islands and the Isle of Man count as the UK, so all cover options are available there.
Travel isn’t covered: you’ll need travel insurance too
Wedding insurance protects the wedding itself, not your journey. Wedprotect doesn’t cover flights, travel disruption, or being unable to travel. That includes cases where you’re advised not to fly, unless the illness or injury itself makes you medically unfit to attend. We recommend separate travel insurance for you and your guests.
FCDO travel advice
There’s no cover for travel to a country, area or event where the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has issued travel restrictions. Check gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice before you book and again before you travel.
Things to check before you book
If you use a wedding planner, only the fee you pay them directly is covered if they fail financially. Money they hold for other suppliers isn’t.
If you pay by credit card, you may be able to claim from your card provider under Section 75. You must try this before claiming from us.
Choose a cancellation limit that covers your total wedding cost.
