Honeymoon cover: protect your honeymoon if your wedding is cancelled

You’ve booked the flights and the hotel. Then something outside your control means the wedding can’t go ahead. Most wedding insurance policies don’t cover the honeymoon in that situation, and travel insurance may not either. Wedprotect’s optional Honeymoon Cover is designed for exactly that gap.

Why it matters

Wedding insurance usually covers the wedding itself, not travel. Travel insurance usually covers cancellation for reasons like illness affecting the people travelling. But if your honeymoon is cancelled because your venue burned down or your venue went bust, your travel policy may not pay out. Check your own travel policy to see what it covers.

Not many UK wedding insurers offer Honeymoon Cover, so it’s worth checking if you’re comparing policies.

What’s covered

If your wedding has to be cancelled and you have a valid cancellation claim under Section 1, we’ll pay the irrecoverable honeymoon travel and accommodation costs you’ve already paid or are legally required to pay, up to your chosen limit.

That means Honeymoon Cover applies when your wedding is cancelled for one of the reasons covered by your policy, for example:

  • Your venue can’t be used because of fire, flood, storm or financial failure.
  • One of you, or a close relative, dies or becomes seriously ill or injured.
  • Adverse weather stops you or at least half your guests reaching the venue.

What’s not covered

  • Honeymoon cancellation where there isn’t a valid Section 1 claim, for example if you simply decide not to go.
  • Anything not covered under Section 1, such as changing your mind, relationship breakdown, pandemics or excluded medical conditions.
  • Travel or accommodation not booked through a recognised commercial travel or accommodation provider.
  • Costs you can get back from somewhere else, such as your travel provider, your card provider or another insurance policy.
  • Problems with the trip itself, such as delays, missed flights, medical costs or lost luggage. You’ll need travel insurance for those.

Do I still need travel insurance?

Yes. Honeymoon Cover only protects your honeymoon costs if your wedding is cancelled. It isn’t travel insurance, and it doesn’t cover anything that happens once you’ve travelled.
