Wedding public liability insurance

Many UK venues ask couples to show they have liability insurance before the big day. Every Wedprotect policy includes Personal Liability for the two of you. If your venue also wants your guests covered, or asks for a higher limit, you can add optional Public Liability (guest liability).

Personal Liability vs Public Liability: what’s the difference?

Both cover legal liability if someone is accidentally injured, or their property is accidentally damaged, during your ceremony or reception. Examples: a guest knocks over a venue’s antique vase, or a supplier trips over a cable you set up.

What it costs

Guest Public Liability is priced on the limit you choose and how many guests you’re inviting. Prices include Insurance Premium Tax.

Important things to know

  • The guest limit is one total limit for all your guests combined, not per guest.
  • Claims between guests aren’t covered, and neither is injury to your own family, guests or employees.
  • The total we’ll pay for all liability claims under Personal and Public Liability combined is £2m, or £5m if you buy the £5m option.
  • There’s no cover for liability arising from animals, fireworks and pyrotechnics, vehicles, drones, bouncy castles or other inflatables, or damage to flooring caused by footwear.
  • Deliberate, reckless or criminal acts aren’t covered.
  • Extra liability you accept under a venue or hire contract isn’t covered unless we agree it in writing. Check your venue’s terms before you sign.
  • Guest Public Liability isn’t available for weddings outside the UK. The Channel Islands and Isle of Man count as the UK.

Does my venue need this?

Ask your venue exactly what they need: who must be covered (you, your guests or both) and what limit. If they want guests covered, add Public Liability. If they ask for £5m, choose the £5m option, which also raises your Personal Liability to £5m. Your policy schedule shows the cover you’ve bought, so you can send it to your venue as proof.
