Buying a policy

Buying a policy

How soon before the wedding can I buy?

You can buy Wedprotect up to 24 months before your wedding, and you'll need to do it at least one month before the big day.

The earlier the better — some sections of cover (like supplier financial failure) have a 45-day waiting period from when you buy before you’re covered. The sooner you take out cover, the more protection you have when you need it.

My wedding is more than two years away - can I still get cover?

Our policies cover weddings taking place within 24 months of the date you buy. If your wedding is further away, please contact us at customer@wedprotect.com. Any extension beyond 24 months must be agreed by us in writing and may need an additional premium or administration fee. Otherwise, you can buy your policy once your wedding date is within 24 months.

Will my pre-existing medical conditions affect cover?

This depends on the condition. We don't cover claims relating to certain medical conditions affecting you or a close relative — including:

  • Conditions diagnosed as terminal
  • Conditions where surgery or hospital treatment has been needed in the last 12 months (other than routine monitoring or follow-up)
  • Where someone is on a waiting list for treatment, undergoing or awaiting medical tests or investigations, or awaiting test results
  • Where a medical professional has advised that attending or participating in the wedding may be medically inadvisable

We also don't cover claims for a medical condition where medical advice is first sought before or within 30 days after taking out the policy, and a serious illness is subsequently diagnosed that prevents the wedding from proceeding as planned.

If you're unsure whether a condition affects your cover, please get in touch before you buy.

Who can buy Wedprotect?

You can buy Wedprotect if you're booking a marriage, civil partnership, blessing or renewal of vows ceremony — whether legally binding or not.

For weddings in the UK, at least one of the marrying couple must be a British citizen or permanent UK resident. For weddings abroad, at least one must be a permanent UK resident.

Your reception must take place within 30 days before or after your ceremony date.

Someone else, such as a parent, can purchase and pay for the policy on behalf of the marrying couple. However, the marrying couple must always be named as the policyholders and are the insured persons under the policy.

Can I add to my policy later?

Yes — get in touch with our Customer Services team and we can usually update or amend your policy.

Depending on the change, an additional premium or administration fee may apply. For more significant changes, we may need to set up a new policy.

Email us at customer@wedprotect.com and we'll talk you through your options.

Why do I need wedding insurance?

The average UK wedding costs £20,604 (Bridebook UK Wedding Report 2026), and much of that can be paid in deposits and final balances long before the big day. If something unexpected means you have to cancel, cut the wedding short or rearrange — such as serious illness or death, the financial failure of a supplier, damage to the venue or adverse weather — you could be left significantly out of pocket.

Wedprotect can cover cancellation or rearrangement, supplier financial failure, lost or damaged items, photography, personal liability and more, from £12.43. It helps protect the money you’ve committed to your wedding and can help with the cost of putting things right when the unexpected happens, subject to the terms, conditions and limits of your policy.

Is it a one-off payment?

Yes. The price you see is a single payment — no monthly premiums, recurring charges or renewals. Cover starts when you buy and runs until your wedding takes place.

Are civil partnerships covered?

Yes. Wedprotect covers marriages, civil partnerships and renewal of vows ceremonies — all treated the same under the policy.

Are non-legally binding ceremonies covered?

Yes. Wedprotect covers ceremonies and blessings that celebrate a marriage or civil partnership, whether legally binding or not. This includes religious ceremonies, humanist ceremonies, blessings and renewals of vows.

What if a friend or family member is paying for part of our wedding?

That's fine. A friend or family member can contribute towards the cost of your wedding, and eligible costs they've paid can be included in a claim, provided they can show evidence of their financial contribution.

The Wedprotect policy itself must still be in the names of the marrying couple, even if someone else has purchased the policy or contributed towards the wedding costs.

What's covered

What's Covered

What's included as standard?

Every Wedprotect policy includes cover for:

  • Cancellation, curtailment and rearrangement
  • Financial failure of wedding suppliers
  • Ceremonial attire
  • Photography and video
  • Rings, flowers, attendants' gifts and wedding cake
  • Wedding cars and transport
  • Wedding gifts
  • Personal liability

You can also choose to add Public Liability, Marquee Cover and Honeymoon Cover for an additional premium. Cover is subject to the limits, terms, conditions and exclusions of your policy.

Is supplier failure covered from day one?

No. Cover for the financial failure of wedding suppliers starts 45 days after you purchase your policy.

This means there is no cover if a wedding supplier financially fails during the first 45 days of your policy. We recommend buying your wedding insurance as early as possible so you can benefit from this cover sooner.

Is my engagement ring covered?

No. Wedprotect covers your wedding rings, but engagement rings are not covered.

Your wedding rings are covered against loss or damage from 3 days before the wedding ceremony until 24 hours after the ceremony, subject to the terms and conditions of your policy.

What happens if my wedding photos or videos can't be delivered?

If your photographer or videographer has provided their services but your photos or videos can't subsequently be delivered, Wedprotect can cover the irrecoverable amount you've paid or are contracted to pay if this is due to:

  • The death of your contracted photographer or videographer before your photos or videos are delivered
  • Loss, theft or damage to the media containing your images before copies have been made
  • Sudden and unforeseen failure of photographic or recording equipment
  • Corruption or malfunction of the recording media, provided reasonable precautions were taken

Cover continues until your photos or videos are delivered, or 90 days after the later of your ceremony or reception date, whichever happens first.

We don't cover dissatisfaction with the quality, style, editing or content of photographs or videos that have been produced and delivered. Financial failure of a photographer or videographer is covered separately under the Financial Failure section.

Are wedding gifts covered?

Yes. Non-cash wedding gifts given to the marrying couple are covered against loss, theft or accidental damage from 3 days before the ceremony until 24 hours after, up to £250 per individual gift and the overall limit shown in your policy schedule.

Cash and vouchers aren't covered, and you must take reasonable precautions to keep wedding gifts safe and secure.

What about adverse weather?

Adverse weather can be covered if:

  • It results in the official closure of public transport services or road networks; or
  • A formal prohibition on travel is issued by a relevant authority;

and, as a result, you or at least 50% of your guests are unable to reach the wedding venue.

We can't cover weather-related claims if, when you purchased your policy, a named storm, severe weather warning or official advisory affecting the location of your ceremony or reception had already been publicly announced.

Are deposits I've already paid covered?

Yes. Deposits and payments you've already made before buying your Wedprotect policy will be covered if an insured event later affects your wedding. All eligible irrecoverable deposits and payments you've already made will be included in your claim, up to the applicable policy limit.

As with all claims, the terms, conditions and exclusions of the policy apply.

What if a close relative gets sick or dies before the wedding?

If a close relative becomes seriously ill or passes away and this makes cancellation, curtailment or rearrangement of your wedding unavoidable, you may be able to claim. In the case of serious illness, a medical practitioner will need to confirm in writing that the person is medically unfit to attend or participate in the wedding.

Two important conditions:

  • Claims relating to the death of a close relative aren't covered if the death occurs more than 2 months before the wedding
  • Certain pre-existing medical conditions are excluded (see “Will my pre-existing medical conditions affect cover?”)

Am I covered for pregnancy?

Pregnancy itself isn't a reason for cancellation under the policy. We do cover serious complications of pregnancy or childbirth that make it necessary to cancel, curtail or rearrange your wedding — but only where the expected date of delivery is at least five months after the ceremony date.

If your expected date of delivery is less than five months after the ceremony date, pregnancy or childbirth-related claims aren't covered.

What if my ceremony and reception are on different dates?

That's fine — provided the reception takes place within 30 days of the ceremony, before or after. One policy covers a single ceremony plus a single reception, even on different dates.

Can I cover multiple ceremonies on one policy?

No. One Wedprotect policy covers a maximum of one ceremony and one reception, with the reception taking place within 30 days before or after the ceremony.

If you're having additional ceremonies or receptions — such as a separate religious or cultural ceremony — you'll need a separate policy for each additional ceremony or reception.

Are we covered for war, terrorism or civil unrest?

War, invasion, rebellion and civil unrest aren't covered by the policy.

However, there is a specific exception for terrorism at your booked ceremony or reception venue. If a terrorist incident at the venue makes it unusable and your wedding has to be cancelled, curtailed or rearranged as a result, you may be able to claim.

Terrorism or civil unrest occurring elsewhere that does not make your booked venue unusable isn't covered.

What about fuel shortages or flight cancellations?

Fuel shortages, transport strikes, flight cancellations and general travel disruption aren't covered by Wedprotect.

The policy doesn't cover disruption to scheduled public transport services such as buses, trains, airlines or ferries, or claims arising from the cancellation or disruption of your travel arrangements.

However, separate cover may apply where adverse weather results in the official closure of public transport services or road networks and prevents you or at least 50% of your guests from reaching the wedding venue.

Is COVID-19 or pandemic-related cancellation covered?

No. Wedprotect doesn't cover claims arising from a pandemic or epidemic, including government restrictions affecting venues, travel or gatherings — even if those restrictions mean your wedding cannot legally go ahead.

Claims arising from death or serious illness due to COVID-19 are also not covered.

Are wedding planners covered if they cease trading?

Limited cover applies. If you've contracted directly with a professional wedding planner and paid them for their own services — such as a planning fee — those costs can be covered if they go into financial failure after the 45-day waiting period.

We don't cover money you've paid to a wedding planner for them to pass on to other wedding suppliers. Cover for the planner is limited to the services you've contracted and paid them to provide directly.

Making a claim

Making a claim

How do I make a claim?

Get in touch with our Claims Department as soon as possible — and before making any decisions or arrangements with your wedding suppliers. Contacting us early helps us minimise costs and explain what is and isn't covered.

The quickest way to claim is our online claim form. You can also email claims@wedprotect.com or call our Claims Department on 01702 846 920.

What documents will I need?

It depends on the type of claim. Some of the most common evidence we may ask for includes:

  • Receipts, invoices and wedding supplier contracts
  • Bank or credit card statements showing payments made
  • Medical reports from a medical practitioner for illness-related claims
  • A death certificate where relevant
  • Confirmation from an expert that damaged property is beyond repair
  • A crime reference number from the police for theft or criminal damage claims

You don't need to have everything before contacting us. Send us what you have and your claims handler will let you know if anything else is needed.

Is there an excess?

Yes — most sections of the policy have an excess, which is the amount you'll need to pay towards a claim. The applicable excess is shown on your policy schedule.

Add the Excess Waiver for £10 and pay no excess on any claim.

If you've added the Excess Waiver when purchasing your policy, your excess is reduced to £0.

What if my claim is declined?

If we can't accept your claim, we'll explain the reasons for our decision in writing, with reference to the relevant terms of your policy.

If you don't agree with our decision, you can raise a formal complaint. We'll investigate your complaint and provide you with a final response as soon as possible, and at the latest within 8 weeks.

If you're still unhappy with the outcome, you may be able to refer your complaint to the Financial Ombudsman Service, which is independent and free to use.

How long does a claim take?

Every claim is different. Once we've received your completed claim form and supporting documents, a claims handler will review everything and let you know what happens next.

We aim to assess and settle claims as quickly as possible, but more complex claims — or those requiring additional evidence or information from third parties — may take longer.

Can I buy a policy now if a supplier of mine is already in trouble?

You can still buy a Wedprotect policy, but you won't be covered for the financial failure of a supplier if, when you buy your policy, they're already in financial failure or you're aware they've ceased trading or are about to enter insolvency proceedings.

That's why it's a good idea to take out wedding insurance as early as possible, before you're aware of anything that could potentially lead to a claim.

What's the difference between cancellation, rearrangement and curtailment?

These are three different ways a claim under Section 1 can be settled. You can only claim under one of them for the same insured event.

  • Cancellation - your wedding can't go ahead and you can’t or don't rearrange it. We'll reimburse eligible irrecoverable costs you've paid or are legally required to pay, up to your policy limit.
  • Rearrangement - your wedding can't go ahead as planned and you want to rearrange it. We'll cover the reasonable costs of holding your wedding on a new date and/or at a new venue, subject to the policy terms and your policy limit. The rearranged wedding must take place within 12 months of the original ceremony date.
  • Curtailment - your ceremony or reception has already started but has to be cut short. We'll reimburse eligible irrecoverable costs for unused wedding services, up to your policy limit.
Cancellation & refunds

Cancellation & refunds

What if I change my mind after buying?

You have 14 days from the date you buy your policy to change your mind. Provided no claim has been made or is pending, we'll cancel your policy and refund your premium in full.

To cancel within the 14-day cooling-off period, email us at customer@wedprotect.com.

After the 14-day cooling-off period, your premium is non-refundable.

Can Wedprotect cancel my policy?

We can cancel your policy by giving you 14 days' written notice where there's a valid reason - for example:

  • Non-payment of premium
  • Threatening or abusive behaviour
  • Suspected fraud
  • Failure to provide complete and accurate information
  • Failure to comply with the policy terms and conditions

If we cancel your policy, we'll refund the premium you've paid, less a proportionate amount for the time we've already provided cover.

Where our investigations provide evidence of fraud or misrepresentation, we may cancel the policy immediately, backdate the cancellation and retain the premium.

What happens if I rearrange my wedding?

If your wedding has to be rearranged due to an insured event, we can cover the reasonable costs of holding your wedding on a new date and/or at a new venue, up to your policy limit.

The rearranged wedding must take place within 12 months of the original ceremony date and be of a similar type and standard to the wedding originally booked. The cost of any replacement supplier can't be more than 25% higher than the original supplier's contracted cost.

Once we settle a claim under this section, your insured wedding is treated as concluded. If you want to insure the rearranged wedding, you'll need to purchase a new policy for it.

Does the policy cover changing my mind about getting married?

No - changing your mind, separation or relationship breakdown aren't covered. Failing to meet legal, religious or administrative requirements for the marriage or civil partnership to proceed isn't covered either.

Wedprotect protects against serious, unexpected events that affect your wedding - not changes of heart.

Weddings abroad

Weddings abroad

Does cover apply abroad?

Yes - most of your Wedprotect cover applies whether you're getting married in the UK or overseas. A few sections have geographic restrictions:

  • Public Liability and Marquee Cover are UK only
  • Personal Liability doesn't apply to weddings in the USA or Canada

For weddings abroad, at least one of the marrying couple must be a permanent UK resident.

Please note that we don't provide cover to travel to a country, specific area or event where the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has issued travel restrictions.

Are there countries you don't cover?

Wedprotect is only available for weddings taking place in the countries listed in our country selector when you get a quote. If your wedding country isn't listed, we're unable to offer cover.

We also can't provide cover for a wedding in, or travel to, any country, specific area or event where the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has issued travel restrictions.

Personal Liability doesn't apply to weddings in the USA or Canada, while optional Public Liability and Marquee Cover are only available for weddings taking place in the UK.

What about FCDO travel restrictions?

If the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) issues travel restrictions for the country, specific area or event where your wedding is taking place, the policy won't provide cover to travel there.

We recommend checking the latest FCDO travel advice when planning your wedding and again before you travel.

Optional cover

Optional cover

What's the difference between personal and public liability?

Personal Liability is included as standard. It covers the marrying couple's legal liability if they accidentally injure someone or damage someone else's property during the ceremony or reception. Personal Liability doesn't apply to weddings in the USA or Canada.

Public Liability is an optional add-on. It extends liability cover to your wedding guests, if they accidentally injure someone or damage someone else's property during the ceremony or reception. Public Liability is only available for UK weddings.

Do I need marquee cover if my venue provides one?

You may still want to add Marquee Cover if a marquee forms part of your venue booking or wedding package.

Our definition of a marquee includes a marquee, tipi, gazebo or similar structure provided as part of a venue booking or package, as well as one you've hired separately.

Marquee Cover can cover loss, theft or damage to the marquee where you're contractually responsible for that loss or damage. It can also provide cancellation or rearrangement cover if insured loss, theft or damage to the marquee means your wedding can't go ahead as planned.

Marquee Cover is available for UK weddings only and applies during the selected hire period.

What does honeymoon cover include?

Honeymoon Cover protects your irrecoverable travel and accommodation costs that you've already paid, or are legally required to pay, if your wedding has to be cancelled under a valid Section 1 claim and your honeymoon can't go ahead as a result.

It's not standalone travel insurance - cover only applies where the cancellation of your wedding results in a valid claim under Section 1.

Your travel and accommodation must be booked through a recognised commercial travel or accommodation provider.
